CONNOR and CARIBOU – Marlene M. Staples, 69, died unexpectedly May 14, 2010, at a Caribou hospital. She was born Oct. 5, 1940, in Connor Township, daughter of the late Albert and Marie (Dubay) Theriault. She was a graduate of Marie Joseph Academy, Biddeford. Mrs. Staples was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she was active in many church groups and functions including Ladies of St. Anne, teaching catechism, as well as singing in the church choir. She married Kermit Staples, July 23, 1960. Marlene was a talented and creative person. She touched many lives with her talents, including cooking and sewing, and she was always willing to lend a hand to those in need. She was a gifted cake decorator and many were the recipients of her beautiful wedding, birthday or special occasion cakes, and she was the cake decorating instructor for the Caribou Adult Education program for more than 15 years. Marlene loved to make beautiful quilts and received numerous awards for her quilts. Most importantly she was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister to her family. She loved to attend all of her grandchildren’s sporting events and recitals. She was employed by Daigle Oil for several years and more recently she and Kermit would spend winters in Florida, where she was a sewing instructor and worked at Expert Sewing Center, Port Charlotte, Fla. She was a member of the Maine and Florida Quilters Guild and also served on the executive board of directors, Northern Maine Development Commission for several years. Surviving in addition to her husband of nearly 50 years, Kermit of Connor, are four sons and daughters-in-law, Craig and Annette Staples of Caribou, Kerry and Susan Staples of Hollis, Kevin and Tina Staples of Bristol, Conn., and Dean and Donna Staples of Limestone; two daughters and a son-in-law, Denna and James Wilson of Windham and Robin Staples of Abilene, Texas; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Francis and Sharon Theriault of Punta Gorda, Fla., Gene and Edna Theriault of Caribou, Walter and Beverly Theriault of Great Falls, Mont., Norman and Linda Theriault, and Rick and Lynn Theriault, all of Caribou; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Nancy and Richard Shaw of Caribou, Noela Ouellette of Connor and Karen and Anson Thibodeau of Caribou; 11 grandchildren, Kyle and Emily Staples, Olivia Staples, Jacob, Danielle, Reed and Hunter Wilson, Kayla and Cole Staples, Madison and Nicholas Staples; one great-grandson, Parker; many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Staples was predeceased by a sister, Joyce. Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 19, at Parish of the Precious Blood, Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Clement Thibodeau officiating, assisted by Father Aaron Damboise, associate pastor.
