FORT KENT, Maine — A tip from a resident led members of the Fort Kent Police Department to the discovery of 24 cultivated marijuana plants growing at a private residence.
John A. Fernandez, 30, was arrested Saturday night and charged with cultivating marijuana, a Class D misdemeanor, said Kenneth Michaud, Fort Kent chief of police.
According to Michaud, Officer Richard Martin, acting on a tip that Fernandez was growing marijuana in his home, went to the residence to question him.
“At 9:30 p.m. Officer Martin went to the residence and spoke to John Fernandez,” Michaud said Sunday afternoon. “Before a warrant was needed to search the premises, Mr. Fernandez confessed to growing the marijuana in the cellar.”
Martin, assisted by Officer Steve Hagland, seized 24 plants ranging in size from a few inches to 41/2 feet and equipment used to grow the plants indoors.
“The cellar was well set up for growing plants,” Michaud said.
Michaud did not have a value for the plants.
Fernandez is scheduled for arraignment on July 9 in Fort Kent District Court. Michaud said no further charges are pending at this time.
