ORRINGTON – Glendon Francis Rand passed away peacefully May 29, 2010, at his home. He was born Feb. 18, 1928, in Harvey Station, New Brunswick, son of the late Edward and Virginia Rand. At age 9, Glen moved with his family to Bangor. He attended Bangor High School and graduated in the Class of 1947. He was a printer by trade and worked at Bacon Printing Co. for 30 years and worked as print shop manager for the state of Maine at Bangor Mental Health Institute for 20 years. He was an extraordinary community leader for the town of Orrington. He served as selectman on the advisory committee and as chairman of the board of appeals. He was chairman of the Orrington Bicentennial celebration, organized the Old Home Days parade for many years and was honored as grand marshal in 1994. Glen was a notary public for more than 30 years. He was a member of Brewer Kiwanis Club. He was a life member at Ralph J. Pollard Lodge, Orrington and a 32nd degree Scottish rite mason of Bangor and Portland. He was captain of Anah Temple Shrine Drum and Bugle Corps. After retirement, he worked at Wal-Mart, Bangor. He loved this job and the people he worked for. He always had many Wal-Mart stories. He was honored to be selected as ribbon cutter to open the new Wal-Mart, July 2009. He also loved going to Coach House Restaurant to have coffee with his buddies and it is here that he got labeled, “Mr. Wal-Mart” and “The Mayor.” Glen is survived by his wife, Eleanor “Ellie” Rand of Orrington; a son, Glendon Rand II of Orrington and his sons, Luke, Colby and Dixon; his daughter, Jean Welch of Clinton and husband, Edward, and their children, Patrick Welch of Bozeman, Mont., Kayla Krause of China and her husband, Bill, and great-grandson, Myles Nored; a daughter, Barbara Carr of Sutton, N.H., and her husband, Kevin, and their children, Brendan, Brigid, Annie and Matthew; a daughter, Laurie Cyr of South Portland and husband, James, and their children, Meghan, Brady and Madison; also special close friends, Leonel and Lisette Ducas. A celebration of Glen’s life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 5, at East Orrington Congregational Church. A reception will be afterward.
