MACHIASPORT – Our family said goodbye to Emma W. Holmes, loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, June 14, 2010. Emma was born Nov. 4, 1926, the oldest child of Clarence and Ida (Wood) Wood. Emma lived her entire life in Machiasport, raising her son, Ronald A. Holmes, and caring for her extended family. In addition to her work as a homemaker, she worked at local sardine factories for many years and earned the reputation as one of Machiasport’s “fastest packers.” A woman of strong faith, Emma has now been reunited with her beloved husband, Donald Holmes, who predeceased her in 1998. Emma is survived by son, Ronald Holmes and wife, Sharon, of New Sharon; grandchildren, Christine Holmes of Haverhill, Mass., Joseph Holmes of Quincy, Mass., and Katie Holmes of New Sharon. She is also survived by siblings, Dot Muzzy, Vernon Wood and wife, Gwen, Nelson Wood, Reginald Wood and wife, Jean, Sharon Gately and husband, Eddie, and Jackie Pettegrow, all of Machiasport, Denis Wood and wife, Judy, of Machias, Algy Wood and wife, Amy, of Marshfield, and Joyce Hooper and husband, Stanley, of Florida. She is also survived by many nephews, nieces and special friends. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents; brother-in-law, Gilbert Pettegrow; sister-in-law, Carolyn Wood; and her special mother and father-in-law, Harrison and Emily Holmes. Emma loved her family and she will be greatly missed. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, June 18, at Bucks Harbor Cemetery with Pastor William Holmes, of Larrabee Baptist Church where Emma was a member for many years, officiating.
