MADAWASKA – William S. “Bill” Stevens died peacefully June 17, 2010, with his family by his side. He was born Oct. 23, 1938, in Edmundston, New Brunswick. Bill grew up and attended schools in Woodstock, New Brunswick, and was a 1958 graduate of Madawaska High School. Upon graduation, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for two years at Fort Lewis, Wash. While out West, Bill married his high school sweetheart, Terry. In 1960 they returned to Madawaska, where Bill was employed by Fraser Paper Inc. for 35 years as a beater room engineer. While working at Fraser Paper, Bill attended the University of Maine at Fort Kent and worked on obtaining his college degree. Bill became a U.S. citizen in 1993 and was a fourth degree Knight of Columbus. Upon retirement, Bill and his beloved wife, Terry, spent winters in Florida and summers at their camp on the island on Long Lake. Bill volunteered as a eucharistic minister for St. Michaels Catholic Church, New Port Richey, Fla. He always had a vegetable garden at the camp, and most recently has gotten a lot of enjoyment from having all his kids and their spouses around him. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Terry Stevens, and their dog, Logan; daughter, Carrie and her husband, Vinny Lord, of Windsor; son, Craig Stevens and his wife, Chantel, of Westbrook; daughter, Beth and her husband, Lee Griffith; granddaughter, Summer Anderson of Westport, Conn.; many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Bill will be greatly missed by his family and his many, many friends in Maine, Florida and Massachusetts. Bill was predeceased by a son, Randy; mother, Mary; brother, Howard Jr.; and father, Howard Sr. The family thanks the many doctors and hospice workers at Hospice Care of the Berkshires. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Aug. 7 at St. David Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, Bill requested memorial donations be made to Hospice Care, 877 South St., Suite 1W, Pittsfield, MA 01201 or Edgar J. Paradis Cancer Fund, care of Northern Maine Medical Center, 194 East Main St., Fort Kent, ME 04743.
