AVON PARK, Fla. – Richard Armand Danie, 81, died Saturday, June 26, 2010, at the Oaks at Avon Center, Avon Park, Fla., after a brief illness. Born and raised in Sanford, the son of Clifford and Ruby (Gelison) Danie, he was an early resident of Westbrook. After graduating from Sanford High School in 1946, he met his first love, Sophia Ginger, and they were married in 1947. From 1946 to 1952, during the Korean War, he served in the National Guard, holding the rank of sergeant first class. After serving with the National Guard, Mr. Danie had the opportunity to join S. D. Warren Paper Co., Westbrook, and Muskegon, Mich. He further pursued his career in the paper industry in Millinocket and later Madawaska, where he met his beloved second wife, Patricia Roy, in 1974. Together they returned to Westbrook to become proprietors of Danie’s Variety. In 1983 they retired to Islamorada, Fla., during the winter season and St. David in the summer season. After the passing of Patricia in 1993, Mr. Danie set up his winter home in Avon Park, Fla. He met his dear friend and longtime companion, Germaine Michaud, in 1997. Mr. Danie was a past exalted ruler of Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 1521 and a longtime member of American Legion. He was also a member of Long Lake Country Club, St. David, an avid fisherman and hunter. He leaves his companion of 13 years, Germaine Michaud; his first wife of 25 years, Sophia Danie; his sons and daughters, Dennis Danie, Marcia Gray, Dwight Danie, Dale Danie and Jessica Roy; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and many close friends and relatives. He was predeceased by his wife of 19 years, Patricia Danie.
