DEER ISLE – Walter W. Smith, 69, died July 11, 2010, at a Blue Hill hospital. He was born June 14, 1941, in Dorchester, Mass., the son of Milton and Nellie (Gray) Smith. Walter worked as a stevedore for his father’s business, Smith Unloading, Chelsea, Mass., for 30 years until moving to Maine in 1995, at which time he worked at Country View Drive-In, Sedgwick, until its closing in 2006. Walter enjoyed his birds and gardens, but mostly enjoyed betting on sports games with his mother over the phone. He will be greatly missed by his close friends, Wiley Billings and Sandy Ricter, both of Deer Isle. He is survived by his two daughters, Debra Smith and Sherry A. Smith and partner, David Roggiero, both of Sedgwick; three stepdaughters, Trudi Clark of Blue Hill, Jenny Clark of Deer Isle and Katie Clark of Deer Isle; his mother, Nellie Smith of Sedgwick; four grandchildren, Evelyn Casanova, Chrystal Laieski, Kristin Dyer and Logan-Ann Collins; several great-grandchildren; three brothers, Gordon Smith and his wife, Carole, of California, George Smith and his wife, Helen, of Connecticut and John Smith and his wife, Kathy, of Massachusetts; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his father, he was predeceased by his wives, Donna (Billings) Smith and Debra (Weed) Smith. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. July 24 at Forest Hill Cemetery, Deer Isle. A service of Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Stonington.
