OAKFIELD – Dale A. Harper, 88, passed away peacefully June 24, 2010, in West Chester, Pa. He was born in Millinocket and grew up in Oakfield, where his father, Frank, and mother, Rula (Shaw), owned a grocery store. Mr. Harper played basketball and baseball for Oakfield High School teams, and he graduated in 1939. He received his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Springfield College, and served in the Navy during World War II. Mr. Harper had a successful 32-year career as a teacher, coach and school administrator in West Hartford, Conn. He retired as athletic director in 1979, and split his time between homes on Pleasant Lake, Island Falls, and central Florida. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Beverly (Gurney) of Waterville, who passed away in 2000. He is survived by his son, Andrew Harper of West Chester, Pa., and his wife, Allison, two granddaughters and one great-grandson; his sister, Hope Webb; nephew, Jeff Webb; and niece, Marcia Bouchard, all living in the Greater Portland area. A private memorial service with immediate family was held in Pennsylvania.
