MACHIASPORT – Eleanor Jane (Chadwick) Clarke, 96, passed away peacefully July 25, 2010, at a Machias nursing facility. She was born March 20, 1914, in Calais, daughter of Elbridge G. and Lillian (Watters) Chadwick. Eleanor grew up in Machias, graduating from Machias High School in 1931. She earned a two-year diploma from Washington State Normal School in 1933 and a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Washington State College in 1966. She taught elementary school in a number of Washington County communities throughout 16 years, from 1936 to 1972, including East Machias, Machiasport, Milbridge and Wesley. She was a life member of Order of the Eastern Star, Warren Chapter No. 131. Eleanor married Melvin Clarke, in 1951, and together owned and operated Elm Hotel, Lancaster, N.H., for three years. They worked in Norwalk, Conn., from 1969 to 1981, where Mel was captain of Norwalk Yacht Club. She enjoyed making handcrafts, genealogy, reading and visiting with friends. She is survived by her three grandchildren and their spouses, Dr. Brian and Ruth Beal of Marshfield, Beth and Albert Carver of Beals, and Brent and Linissa Beal of Hermon; several nieces and nephews, and five great-grandchildren. Eleanor was predeceased by her husband, Melvin, in 1996; daughter, Marie, in 2008; brothers, E. Shirley, Paul and Phillip; and sister, Lois (Chadwick) Sproul. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at Bayview Cemetery, Larrabee. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations to her memory to Larrabee Baptist Church, P.O.
