FRANKLIN, Maine — A structure fire on Wednesday afternoon resulted in heavy smoke damage to a home in the village, according to a local fire official.

Firefighters from four towns went to the fire. Part of Route 182 was closed to traffic after the fire at 19 Blackwoods Road was reported at 1:15 p.m., Franklin fire Lt. Steve Grindle said. The occupants were not home when a passer-by noticed smoke coming out of the house and reported it, he said.

“It did little fire damage but a lot of smoke damage,” Grindle said, adding there was water damage, too.

Grindle said the fire was electrical in nature and burned in the living room. He said he was not sure who the owners are but that the house is insured.

Investigators with the State Fire Marshal’s Office are expected to examine the scene Thursday to find out more about how it started, Grindle said.

The residents of the home are expected to stay with friends in the area, he said.

Between 25 and 30 firefighters from Franklin, Hancock, Sorrento and Sullivan helped extinguish the flames, according to Grindle. Fire crews cleared the scene shortly after 4 p.m., he said.
