EDDINGTON – Carolynn Ann Shuman “Lynn” Baker, 60, passed away July 12, 2010, due to complications after surgery at Maine Medical Center, Portland. Carolynn was born Jan. 1, 1950, in Charleston, S.C., and has the distinction of being the first baby born in Charleston County. Born to Margret Moore Shuman and the late Lawrence E Shuman, she was the oldest of seven sisters and two brothers. As a proud Daughter of the Confederacy, she attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic School, Charleston, S.C.; St. Mary Help of Christian’s Catholic School, Aiken, S.C.; and Huntsville High School, before going onto Calhoun Junior College, Huntsville, Ala. In 1969 Carolynn married Charles Lewis Baker in Huntsville, Ala., later moving to Eddington, where she became well known and respected within the surrounding communities. Carolynn was frequently involved with town affairs and is most well known as the librarian for the neighboring town of Clifton. She was active in Girl Scouts and chess teams of Holbrook Middle School and John Bapst High School, each of which won several state championships and went on to nationals. She and her family resided at the residence of Bangor Water District main pumping facility, Otis. For 29 years were she diligently watched over things like spotting forest fires, making sure the operators always received a Christmas and Thanksgiving dinner and throughout the years, helped with many open houses. Carolynn is survived by her husband, Charles L. Baker; three children, Charles Jr., Dina Maria of Eddington and Rodney Arthur and his wife, Dr. Dianna Baker, of Lebanon, N.H.; her mother, Margaret M. Shuman; and her eight siblings, Margaret L. Hughes and husband, James, of Roscommon, Mich., Sarah S. Sherman and husband, Mike, Lawrence E. Shuman Jr. and wife, Donna, Rebecca S. Penington and husband, Elliot, Bernardine Walker and her husband, Cary, Catherine G. Shuman, Maria S. Hudson and husband, Mark, and Harold S. Shuman and wife, Emma, all of South Carolina; her mother-in-law, Merry C. Baker of Eddington; sisters-in-law, Cathy Chapman and her husband, Richard, of Virginia and Rebecca Gabula of Eddington; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; other relatives, the late Arthur B. Moore Jr. and wife, Catherine M. Moore; her aunts, Ann E. Moore, James M. Dovre and husband, Alfred; and uncle, Jack Shuman and wife, Barbara, all of South Carolina. A celebration of her life will take place 1-3 p.m. Aug. 28 at Comins Hall, Eddington. Anyone who would like to attend is invited. Please call Charles Baker for more information.
