WINTER HARBOR – Velma Marion (Rand) Young, 91, died Aug. 6, 2010, at a local hospital after a brief illness. She was born March 22, 1919, daughter of Arthur and Bertha (Lorio) Rand. Velma grew up on the hill section of town in what was known as the “Old House,” the Stephen Rand House, one of the first houses in Winter Harbor. Velma graduated with honors from Winter Harbor High School, Class of 1936. She worked at Grindstone Inn, Winter Harbor, in 1938; and in 1939, she went to New York City and worked for the Harper family for two years. On July 20, 1941, she married Oscar Hammond Young of Winter Harbor and moved to Cambridge, Mass., where Oscar was employed by Simplex Co. In 1947 they returned to Winter Harbor and together raised their four sons. Velma worked for seven years as the town’s night telephone operator and summers at the Grindstone swimming pool. Velma was well known for her piano and organ playing skills, taught to her by her mother. She played for many years in local churches, school productions and weddings. Velma was a member of Winter Harbor Cemetery Association for many years and was a supporter of Winter Harbor Historical Society. Velma was a kind and caring person, and will be missed for her gentle ways. She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Gordon Rand; and her husband of 67 years, Oscar Young. Velma is survived by her children, Stephen and his wife, Stacie, Bruce and his wife, Truth, Fred and his partner, Lavone Strickland, and Thomas and his wife, Diana, all of Winter Harbor; grandchildren, Donna Young of Franklin, Scott Young and his wife, Sherry, of Winter Harbor and Jolene Bernier and her husband, Matt, of Sullivan; special great-grandchildren, Morgan Joy of Franklin and Ethan Young of Winter Harbor; a very dear sister, Beatrice Rand Bowling of Winter Harbor; a special friend, Wanda Callor of Franklin; niece, Ruth Rodgers and her husband, Dwight, of Corea; and nephews, Robert St. Arnold of Wyoming and Christopher Byers of Winter Harbor. A graveside service will be celebrated 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at Greenwood Cemetery, Winter Harbor. Gifts in her memory may be sent to First Baptist Church, 315 Main St., Winter Harbor, ME 04693.
