BELFAST, Maine — The Waldo County grand jury handed up indictments for 41 people Thursday, including one man who is accused of killing his wife with a rifle and another man accused of strangling his girlfriend.
Michael L. Littlefield, 48, of Brooks was indicted for intentional or knowing murder in the death of Deborah Littlefield, 49.
Michael Littlefield reportedly used a .30-30 rifle to shoot his wife to death June 25 at their Brooks home, according to police and court documents.
He then lay down on the floor next to her body and contemplated shooting himself, police records say, before allegedly confessing to family and friends. Littlefield reportedly told one of those friends that he shot his wife because she had been nagging him over a truck muffler, according to a police affidavit filed at Waldo County District Court.
The grand jury also indicted Dennis R. Edgecomb, 39, with intentional or knowing murder in the July 20 strangulation death of Pamela Green in her Morrill home, where he had been staying.
Edgecomb had called 911 that day to report that he had just strangled Green and that he did not think she was going to live, according to a police affidavit filed in Waldo County Superior Court.
According to the affidavit, Green had sent a text message to her daughter an hour before his 911 call. “He’s threatening to kill me right now, call and you can hear it,” she wrote.
Edgecomb told police detectives that the fight that day began because he told Green he was planning to move out of the house.
According to a Belfast court official, both Littlefield and Edgecomb will be arraigned at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 24 at Belfast District Court.
If the men are convicted of murder, they will face sentences of 25 years to life in prison.
