BREWER and CLEARWATER, Fla. – Edward “Ed” Matson Sr., 79, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2010, at a Bangor hospital. He was born July 17, 1931, in Bangor, the son of Charles and Alice (Butler) Matson. Ed grew up in Bangor and was a 1949 graduate of John Bapst High School. He spent 42 years in the grocery business and was the Airport Mall store manager for Doug’s Shop ‘n Save and Hannaford. Ed enjoyed sports, fishing, spending time at the family camp on Beech Hill Pond and wintering in Florida. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Ed is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Alice (Blackman) Matson; children, Judy Swan and her husband, Donald, of Dexter, Edward Matson Jr. of Brewer, Harold Matson of Hudson, Terry Jacobs of Fort Myers, Fla., and Gayle Gilley and her husband, James, of Ellsworth; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and son-in-law, Keith Gunning of Winslow. In addition to his parents, Ed was predeceased by his daughter, Jo-Lynn Gunning; brothers, Waldo Matson and Harold Matson; and sister, Phyllis Sanders. A memorial visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, at Brookings-Smith Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer.
