LEWISTON, Maine — A promise of $200,000 in donations will enable the YWCA of Central Maine in Lewiston to stay open.

The 130-year-old institution announced last week that it would have to close.

But the Sun Journal of Lewiston says the YWCA has taken in $75,000 in donations and another $125,000 has been promised by the end of the week.

YWCA leaders plan to begin a $1 million statewide fundraising campaign to erase more than $700,000 in debt and make energy efficient improvements to the YWCA’s East Avenue building.

The YWCA serves about 1,000 swimmers a week and hosts a variety of meetings including weekly dances for people with special needs.
