BANGOR – Peter P. Gilgan, 84, died Aug. 24, 2010, at the Maine Veterans Home. He was born June 29, 1926, in Sligo, Ireland, the son of Kathleen (Curran) and John F. Gilgan. Peter emigrated from Ireland at age 8 to meet his mother in Staten Island, N.Y., and helped his mother in the family business of candy making. At age 17, he joined the Navy to serve in World War II. After World War II, he joined the Army and served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a dedicated soldier with nearly 30 years of service to his country. While in the Army, Peter met and married his beloved wife, Mary. After retirement from the service, Peter lived in Brewer with his wife and family, and worked at Diamond International for many years. He is survived by four children, John and his wife, Karen, Kevin and Robert Gilgan, all of Bangor and Maureen O’Malley and her partner, Tracey, of Bucksport; daughter-in-law, Evelyn Conrad of Brewer; six grandchildren, Alexandria, Hilary Haney and her husband, Brandon, Megan Christopherson and her husband, Justin, Colby, Margaret Mary and Chelsea; as well as four great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Ellie, Mary and Iris. He is also survived by two brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law, Dennis “Don” Soucy and his wife, Connie, Frank Soucy, Angela Soucy and Nancy Soucy; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Mary I. (Soucy); one brother, John G. Gilgan; and one sister, Mary Vroom. The family thanks the staff of the Maine Veterans Home for their loving support and care. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Greenlawn Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Interment with full military honors will be 1 p.m. Monday at Maine Veterans Cemetery, Augusta.
