VENICE, Fla., and CAMDEN – Prudence Weaver Dickey, 80, wife of Kenneth C. Dickey, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center. Born Sept. 3, 1929, in Camden, she was the daughter of Harold S. and Olive (Leonard) Corthell, and was a descendant of the Leicht family, who were early German settlers in Waldoboro. She grew up in Camden and was a 1947 graduate of Camden High School, where she was on the first group of cheerleaders. She graduated from Westbrook College in 1949. The first year the Lobster Festival was held in Camden, Prudy was a sea princess. She married Kenneth C. Dickey, Nov. 11, 1949, in Camden. Mrs. Dickey grew up in the clothing business as her father owned and operated Haskell & Corthell, Main Street, Camden. Prudy and Ken took over the operation of the store, which expanded to include The Men Shop, The Women’s Shop, The Shoe Hutch, The Ski Barn and The End Shop. She loved buying the sweaters that she would personalize with embroidery for her special customers. She was a charter member and former president of Camden Women’s Club. She was also a member of Megunticook Golf Club and was a former Cub Scout den mother. During the 1930s, her father donated land on Hosmer Pond and Ragged Mountain to the Camden Outing Club. A group of many volunteers, including Prudy, worked to develop and build the Camden Snow Bowl recreation area. She had been an active volunteer with the Outing Club and the Snow Bowl. Her hobbies included gardening, playing golf, knitting, sewing, traveling and going on cruises. They also had some special times on their Carver, “The After Four,” cruising the coast of Maine. Since the late 1970s, Kenneth and Prudy enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida. For the past 20 years, they have resided in Venice, Fla. She was predeceased by a daughter, Jeanette Dickey Peasley, in 1986. Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Kenneth C. Dickey of Camden; three children, David A. Dickey and his companion, Virginia Johns, of Camden, William J. Dickey and his wife, Liana, of Lincolnville and Lynette Dickey O’Hara and her husband, Frank O’Hara Jr., of Rockport; a sister-in-law, Barbara Bryant of Camden; 12 grandchildren, Jason Peasley and his wife, Penny, of Lincolnville, Benjamin Peasley of Denver, Kristin Peasley Bumpus and her husband, William, of Hockessin, Del., Jessica Dickey of Portland, Katherine Dickey, Elizabeth Dickey, both of Camden, Jennifer Dickey Marines and her husband, Charles, of Saco, Amber Dickey, Carissa Dickey, both of Lincolnville, Nicholas J. Gushee O’Hara and his fiancee, Lindsey Bodamer, of Portland, Frances J. O’Hara III and Kenneth Casey O’Hara, both of Rockport; four great-grandchildren, Taylor, Julia and Jordan Peasley, and Addison Bumpus; and Kenneth and Prudy’s special dog, Chico, that adopted them in March. Calling hours will be held 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, at Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St., Camden. The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, at First Congregational Church, 55 Elm St., Camden, with the Rev. Kevin Pleas officiating. Burial will be held afterward at Oak Hill Cemetery, Camden, with a reception immediately after at the Camden Snow Bowl.
