BANGOR – The Rev. Sidney E. Buzzell, 85, died Aug. 24, 2010, at a Bangor hospital. He was born July 25, 1925, in Guilford, son of Harold and Ethel (Strickland) Buzzell. He attended Guilford schools and then graduated from Sangerville High School, Class of 1943. After high school Sid enlisted in the U.S. Army, HQ Battery 692nd Field Artillery. He served as staff sergeant in the European Theater, having landed on Utah Beach in 1944 as part of the D-Day invasion. After returning home from the war he and his father owned and operated H.E. Buzzell and Son Market, Sangerville, until 1969. He served as a supply pastor for several years while he attended Boston School of Theology, becoming ordained as a Methodist minister in the early 1970s. Sid served in several parishes in central Maine, including East Corinth and West Corinth Methodist churches, Grace Methodist Church, Bangor, and Guilford United Methodist Church, retiring to Bangor in 1993. He was a past master and 50-year member of Abner Wade Masonic Lodge and a 50-year member of Susie Carr Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star, both in Sangerville. After retiring from the pastorate, Sid was very active with the troop greeters at Bangor International Airport, the YMCA cardiac program and volunteered at the Alzheimer’s day center, My Friends Place. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth (Loane) Buzzell of Bangor; two daughters, Helen Feldman and her husband, Howard, of Auburn and Jeanne Cookson and her husband, David, of Guilford; five grandchildren, Lane Feldman and his wife, Anna, of Auburn, Adam Feldman and his wife, Rebecca, of Vermont, Scott Feldman and his wife, Dawn, of Auburn, Rachel Hutchins and her husband, Sam, of Parkman and Daniel Cookson of Dexter; eight great-grandchildren, Ben, Morgan, Nicholas, Nathaniel, Sydney, Sarah, Brandon and Kaitlyn; two brothers, Norman Buzzell and his wife, Marguerite, of Bangor and Sterling Buzzell and his wife, Barbara, of Pennsylvania; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, at First Methodist Church, Essex Street, Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. Randall Chretien officiating. Graveside committal services with military honors will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Village Cemetery, Sangerville, with Pastor Stephen Dean and members of Abner Wade Masonic Lodge officiating.
