PRINCETON – William R. Smith, 56, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, at Gifford Medical Center, Randolph, Vt. Born July 26, 1954, in Southington, Conn., he was the son of Ruth (Monk) Smith of Plantsville, Conn., and the late Kent Smith. Bill attended Southington, Conn., schools and graduated from Southington High School in 1972. He moved to Maine in 1974 and made his home in Princeton. Before retiring he worked for the Princeton Police Force and Woodland Paper Mill. He was a former selectman for Princeton and was instrumental for bringing federal funds to Princeton Airport for upkeep and development. Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending quality time with his family and friends. He always held out a helping hand to anyone in need and lived life to the fullest. In addition to his mother, he leaves two daughters, Carla Griffin and husband, Shawn, of Southington, Conn., and Michelle Washington and husband, Andrew, of Plainville, Conn.; two sons, William R. Smith Jr. of Bangor and Brandon Smith of Princeton; stepdaughter, Amy McArthur and husband, Brian, of Dayville, Conn.; a brother, Kent Smith Jr. and wife, Lynne, of Southington, Conn.; a sister, Kathleen Porretti and husband, Lou, of Plantsville, Conn.; five grandchildren, Matthew and Mark Griffin, Emily, Evan and Elizabeth McArthur; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Bertha Caldwell and Karen Szpak. Calling hours will be 4-8 p.m. Friday at DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 North Main St., Southington, Conn. The funeral will be held 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at Plantsville Congregational Church, 99 Church St., Plantsville, Conn. Burial will be afterward at Oak Hill Cemetery.
