KITTERY, Maine — It’s the 105th anniversary of the Portsmouth Peace Treaty.
Sunday is being recognized as “Portsmouth Peace Treaty Day.” On Sept. 5, 1905, the treaty — mediated by President Theodore Roosevelt — was signed to end the Russo-Japanese War.
Events marking the anniversary this year include the U.S. Navy commemoration at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard followed by bell-ringing in Market Square at 3:47 p.m. — the moment the treaty was signed. There’s also free admission to an exhibit at the John Paul Jones House Museum.
