I awoke
in the dark
of the night.

The kitchen
lights were on,
my sister

at the counter,
young hands
in a bowl

of bright red
berries, her eyes
asking help,

I don’t know
what to do
with all this –

the berries,
she meant, which
I took in

to my own
hands, hungry
for ripe fruit
