BIDDEFORD – Lt. Colonel Charles Albert Keenan died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010, at his home. He was born July 9, 1931, in Mars Hill, the fifth child of Leo and Theresa Keenan. Upon graduation from Aroostook Central Institute, Mars Hill, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served two years as an enlisted man, then went to Officers Candidate School. He became a second lieutenant in 1952. Charles served in Korea, Italy, Turkey, Germany and Vietnam. Other stateside assignments included California, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Georgia, Virginia and New York. He graduated from Command and General Staff College in 1961. Commendations Charles received include the Korea Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defence Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, four Overseas Bars, Army Commendation Medal and two Vietnam Campaign Ribbons. He retired a lieutenant colonel in 1971, completing 20 years of service. Upon retirement Charles and his sons built a home in New Brunswick, where he raised horses for 10 years. Thereafter he raised Christmas trees commercially. Charles married Kathryn Dorothy Mouzas of Biddeford in 1951 and they have three children: a daughter, Dorothy Smith of Presque Isle and two sons, Brian Keenan of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Timothy Keenan of Biddeford. Charles has six grandchildren, Shamus O. Smith, Tara Smith-Vighetti, Emily Smith, Patrick Keenan, Alexandra Keenan and Bridget Keenan. He also has two great-grandsons, Owen Vighetti and Lane Smith-Carmichael. He is survived by his sister, Geraldine Oakes of Presque Isle. Visiting hours will be held 10 a.m. until the time of service noon Friday, Sept. 10, at Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford, with military honors.
