BAR HARBOR and SEAL COVE – Percy T. Reed passed away peacefully Sept. 12, 2010, with his family by his side. He was born July 11, 1917, in Seal Cove, son of Edwin and Jessie Tibbetts Reed. Percy worked many years in Northeast Harbor as a gardener and caretaker – this was an occupation and hobby that he loved throughout his entire life. He worked many years for the Edward Brown family. He also worked a number of years for Thomas Gates, who was secretary of defense under the Eisenhower administration. In the last years of his gardening career, Percy proudly worked for Redmond and Jean Finney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brown. Redmond C.S. Finney published a book named “Summers with Percy” in 2002. Percy enjoyed reading and writing, he created many poems and writings, many of which were incorporated in the book. He was a very intelligent man and was always learning something new. Percy was married for nearly 70 years to his adoring wife, Frances, who passed away peacefully Dec. 25, 2009. Percy is survived by his only child, Brenda and husband, Charles Bartlett, of Bar Harbor. He was very fond of Charlie. Percy had three grandsons who he was very proud of, Duane Bartlett and wife, Robin, of Trenton, Chris Bartlett and wife, Tracy, of Newport, N.H., and Matt Bartlett and wife, Lori, of Bar Harbor. He was also proud of his 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He had many nieces and nephews including a very special nephew, Frank Reed. Many special friends include Redmond and Jean Finney, Ned Finney, the whole Finney family and Juanita Stanley. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at Brookside Cemetery, Mount Desert. Contributions in Percy’s memory may be sent to Southwest Harbor Animal Welfare, Inc., P.O.
