GREENVILLE, Maine —Appointments at the Northwoods Healthcare primary care offices in Greenville were canceled Wednesday afternoon after a spill of carbolic acid, which is used in some medical procedures.

About 500 milliliters of the fluid was spilled inside the facility, causing chemical burns to two employees. One employee was treated and then released from nearby Charles A. Dean Memorial Hospital. The other employee was more seriously burned and was transferred by Life Flight helicopter to a larger facility.

The injuries are not considered life-threatening, according to a statement Wednesday afternoon from Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems in Brewer, the corporate parent of both the medical practice and the hospital.

Appointments at Northwoods Healthcare will resume as scheduled on Thursday, September 16.
