AMHERST, N.H. — Call it the mystery of the missing New Hampshire rock.
A 1,000-pound chunk of granite believed to have sat on a corner in Amherst since the mid-1700s telling travelers “Bedford 7 M’s” was stolen sometime last week, coinciding with the community’s 250th birthday.
Neighbor Jeff Block says it wasn’t kids pulling a prank. He says someone must have used a flatbed truck and a winch to haul away the rock from its spot just off Route 101 between Sept. 25 and Sept. 28.
Block tells the New Hampshire Union Leader the rock had served as a mile post for travelers heading north to Bedford.
Block says he filed a report with the Amherst police, but he just wants to get the rock back.
