BANGOR — An equipment malfunction caused by weather conditions Thursday morning was cited as the cause of a power outage that left 1,178 Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. customers on Ohio and Union streets without electricity.

The malfunction, which occurred shortly before 9 a.m., caused a telephone pole on Ohio Street to catch fire, Bangor police said.

The pole, which belonged to a telephone company, was replaced and electrical service was restored a little more than three hours later —“188 minutes to be exact,” Bangor Hydro spokeswoman Susan Faloon said.
