ASHLAND – George Robert Pike, 75, passed away Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, at Northern Maine Medical Center, Fort Kent. He was born Nov. 29, 1934, in Ashland, the son of George and Edith (Grass) Pike Shaw. He spent his entire life in Aroostook County, graduating from Ashland Community High School in 1951. George attended Ricker College, Houlton, for a year and a half. He returned to Ashland to help his mother farm potatoes. He married the former Laura Sawyer of Ashland. When first married, he and his wife farmed for several years. He then worked for a few years doing odd jobs until he operated heavy equipment for the Great Northern chipper plant in Portage Lake. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially fishing with his youngest son, Norman. He and his wife enjoyed short vacations taking many photos on their trips. His favorite trip was touring a number of the national parks out West, such as Bryce, Zion and Arches, and the north and south rims of the Grand Canyon. In addition to his wife of 54 years, Laura, he is survived by four children: daughter, April Jo Cook and husband, C. Nick, and granddaughter, Edith Ann, all of South Portland, son, Mark Pike and wife, Keri, of Phoenix, son, Norman Pike and wife, Kathy, and grandchildren, Zak and Gwen, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and daughter, Julie Ann Pike of Framingham, Mass.; and three sisters, Evelyn Petosa of Hartford, Conn., Joyce Federa and husband, Ray, of Sequin, Wash., and Arlene Davenport of Bethesda, Md. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Clair. Relatives and friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday and 11 a.m. until the time of service 2 p.m. Wednesday at Union Congregational Church, Sheridan Road, Ashland, with Pastor Nathan Gardiner officiating. There will be a gathering of family and friends at the church after the service. Committal service will be private.
