MOUNT VERNON – Alice Damren Hodgdon Dunn, 85, passed away early Tuesday morning, Oct. 12, 2010, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta. She was born Nov. 10, 1924, in Mount Vernon, daughter of Charles and Edith (Merrow) Damren. Alice and her husband, the Rev. John Dunn Sr., recently celebrated their 20th anniversary, having wed Aug. 18, 1990. Alice attended Belgrade High School for two years before transferring to, and two years later graduating from, Cony High School. Her education continued at Gates Business College, where she received her business degree just two years later. She worked briefly at Brooks Hardware, Augusta, before being employed by the state of Maine as a buyer with the State Bureau of Purchases, where she retired after 30 years of service. A woman of very strong faith, Alice was active in many churches, primarily Dunn’s Corner Baptist Church where she had held such positions as superintendent of Sunday school, treasurer and deaconess, to name a few. She was past master of Readfield Grange, a member of Business & Professional Women’s Club, and was also active in Senior Citizen’s Club in the Readfield area. Parallel to her faith was her strong sense of family and her beliefs of what was right and wrong. She would always be the one to stand up for others and to make sure that the voices of those less fortunate were heard. Alice was also an avid Red Sox fan. Alice was predeceased by her first husband, Kenneth W. Hodgdon; a stepdaughter, Sylvia; and her five brothers and sisters, Elmo, Dorcas, Hope, Reba and George. She is survived by her husband of 20 years, the Rev. John Dunn Sr. of Mount Vernon; her two sons, Ron Hodgdon and his wife, Marie, and Don Hodgdon and his wife, Sharon, all of Mount Vernon; her daughter, Patty Hodgdon Bailey and her husband, Jon, of Litchfield; her two grandchildren, Shannon Cole and her husband, Nathaniel, and Shawn Hodgdon and his wife, Jessica, all of Mount Vernon; and one great-grandson, Colby. She also leaves behind her four stepchildren who loved her dearly, the Rev. John Dunn Jr., Barbara Philbrick, David and Kenneth Dunn; many stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Relatives and friends are invited to visit 4-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta. A celebration of Alice’s life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Dunn’s Corner Baptist Church, 238 Wings Mills Road, Mount Vernon, with the Rev. John Dunn Jr. officiating. Burial will be immediately after at East Readfield Cemetery, Route 17, Readfield, after which all are invited to return to the church for a time of fellowship and refreshments.
