BANGOR – Fred Vardamis, 88, died Oct. 13, 2010, at a Bangor health care facility. He was born Feb. 22, 1922, in Norwich, Conn., son of Vasil and Sotira (Stavrou) Vardamis, of Albania. Fred moved to Bangor as a small child, beginning his life-long affection for the city. Fred was proud to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served under Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman, in the Southwest Pacific, New Caledonia, New Guinea and the Philippines. Fred was a unique and special man. He enjoyed politics and made many friends participating in city government. He served on Bangor Citizens Advisory Committee, Code of Ethics Board, Bangor Parks and Recreation Committee, Bass Park Corp. and Bangor Zoning Board of Appeals. Along with other concerned citizens, Fred was actively involved in the process to keep the police department in Bangor’s downtown. Fred greatly enjoyed nature and exercising, especially walking around his hometown, but most of all cherished the special relationship he had with his grandson, Michael. Surviving are his devoted and loyal wife of 52 years, Arline M. Vardamis of Bangor; his loving daughter, Lori Varney and her husband, Tim, of Bangor; his grandson, Michael Varney and his fiancee, Sarah Berger; his stepson, Wayne Marshall of Dedham; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by eight siblings. The family thanks the wonderful staff of St. Joseph Hospital and the Maine Veterans Home for the heartfelt care and compassion they shared with Fred. Relatives and friends are invited to call 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, with Pastor David Norsworthy officiating.
