PRESQUE ISLE – Dr. Nancy Jean Amodeo, 70, passed away Oct. 14, 2010, at her home after a long battle with cancer. She was born Jan. 16, 1940, in Lynn, Mass., the daughter of Vincent and Vincenza (Giacalone) Amodeo. Nan received her bachelor’s degree from the College of Idaho, her master’s degree from San Francisco State and her doctorate from Idaho State University. She began her teaching career at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, in 1967 at age 27. Nan was a legend at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Her passion for her students, for the community and for the life of the university sets a standard for excellence for all of us. Her passing will be mourned by all who were touched by her good nature, wisdom and her indomitable spirit. After her retirement, she remained in Presque Isle, where she lived with her collie, Sierra Elizabeth; black lab, Acorn Sunflower; and her cats, Catherine Cat, Molly Maloney, Geranium, Little Gracie Gentile and Mazeltov whom she loved dearly. She enjoyed writing poetry and short stories and had two of her books published. She also enjoyed lapidary, woodcarving, fishing, painting and target shooting. Nan is survived by an aunt and uncle, Joseph and Pauline (Giacalone) Bonanno of Connecticut. She also leaves behind special friends, Marie Ouellette, Kathy Hersey, Fred Getchell, Peter Parker, Barb Motes, Sammie Fahey, Sue and Lloyd Snapp, Alan Snapp and his family, and Sue Forbes. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle, where funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday with Raphael Gribetz officiating. Interment will take place after the service at Fairmount Cemetery, Presque Isle. A reception will be held in the reception hall of the funeral home after the committal.
