BELFAST – Henry and Gloria Stover of Belfast celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Sept. 25, 2010, with a party hosted by family members at Belfast Public Library. The event was attended by many family and friends. The couple was married on Sept. 28, 1940, in St. Johnsbury, Vt., with the Rev. John Henry Sargent officiating. Their best man was Roger Parsons and maid of honor was Margaret Parsons, Roger’s cousin. Henry is a June 1936 graduate of Crosby High School in Belfast and Gloria is a June 1938 graduate of Liberty High School and attended Gates Business College in Augusta. Henry was associated with Stover’s Jewelry store on Main Street for 32 years beginning in 1936, and as owner-manager from 1942 to 1968. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1946, during World War II, mostly in Massachusetts, in which he took time off from the store. Henry was custodian of Belfast Town Clock for 30 years. Both Henry and Gloria helped with Boy Scouts in Belfast and beyond, being members of Waldo District Committee, a group serving Boy Scout units in Waldo County. Gloria was a 50-year member of Belfast’s Cub Pack 30, first as a den mother and later, for more than 20 years, as secretary and treasurer. For five years, in the 1970s, Henry and Gloria worked as volunteers in the Waldo County Red Cross chapter, serving local people and military personnel countrywide. For more than 30 years, starting during the Red Cross time, Gloria – with a little help from Henry – served as a volunteer income tax preparer. Each January both of them attended a four-day school put on by the Internal Revenue Service, and February through April Gloria did dozens of tax returns for free. Some were easy, some were difficult, and there were more than 1,000 throughout the years. The Stovers have 21/2 sons, David and his wife, Lilo W. Stover, of Waldo, Daniel H. Stover and his wife, Noreen, of Hampden and Robert “Bob” Stover Jr., who lived with them for 15 years, and his wife, Judy W. Stover, of Belfast. Grandchildren are Nathan Stover and his wife, Kelly, Anje Estabrook and Kenneth, Michael Stover and Ian Stover, all of Waldo, Denise S. Golding of Eddington and Jonathan Stover of Hampden. There are 10 great-grandchildren.
