AUGUSTA – Herbert “Herb” Russell Doten, 77, passed away peacefully Friday, Oct. 15, 2010, with his family by his side, at his home. Herb was born Dec. 14, 1932, in Brewer, son of Cora (Russell) Doten and Henry Leroy Doten. He graduated Orono High School in 1950. He attended the University of Maine, Orono, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering in 1954 and a master’s degree in civil engineering in 1966. As a civil engineer Herb worked for the State of Maine Bridge Division State Highway Commission and Edward C. Jordan Co. He operated his own consulting firm, Doten Associates, which provided civil, structural design and land-surveying services, from 1972 to 1982. Later in his career, he worked for Hunter Ballew Associates and Kleinschmidt Associates, where he served as a vice president and project manager. Mr. Doten was a longtime member of the Maine Society of Professional Engineers, where he served as president, committee chairman and national director. He was a member of National Society of Professional Engineers, where he served on committees, acted as national director for eight years and vice president of the northern region for two years. Herb was elected by his peers as a Fellow of American Consulting Engineers Council for having contributed to professional engineering through leadership and design for more than 25 years. He was listed in “Who’s Who in Engineering” in 1982 and “Who’s Who in the East” in 1979. He was honored by the Francis Crowe Society at the University of Maine in 2004 and accepted the Fogler Legacy Award on behalf of the Doten family in May 2009. He retired from the Army Corps of Engineers in 1985 as a colonel. His military career began with ROTC in 1954, Fort Campbell in 1955 and then to Germany until 1958. He attended multiple training courses, including the Industrial College of the Armed Forces and the Army War College. He earned decorations and badges, including the Meritorious Service Medal in 1985. Herb was a lifetime member of South Parish Congregational Church and a member of the Mayflower Society. He served on the building and grounds committee for Old Fort Western. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; four daughters, Debora and husband, Peter Davis, Dorothy and husband, Gregory Piper, Carol and husband, Joseph Pirruccello, and Kathleen Doten; a son, David Doten; a sister, Shirley Doten Oliver; two nieces, Sharon and Susan Oliver; and several grandchildren. At the family’s request, there will be no public visiting hours. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, at South Parish Congregational Church, Church Street, Augusta. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
