EXETER – Betty Bartlett, 80, died quietly Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at home due to lung cancer. Betty was born July 26, 1930, in Evanston, Ill. She and her future husband, Richard, played music together in the high school orchestra. Classical music was a joy they shared throughout their 58 years of marriage. Betty was well known as a cook by her family and friends who will retain many fond memories of family gatherings. Betty attended Stanford University and Northwestern University before receiving her master’s degree and doctorate in nutrition at The Ohio State University. Betty taught dietetics at The Ohio State University from 1976 to 1998. After moving to Maine, she was an adjunct professor at the University of Maine, serving as assistant director of the dietetic internship from 1999 to 2007. Betty was active in American Dietetic Association for 35 years, serving ably as an advisor to National and Ohio State legislators, and on the board of Maine Dietetic Associations. She is fondly remembered by students and colleagues for her effectiveness, wisdom and humor, as well as her depth and breadth of expertise in clinical and community dietetics. She had a special love for geriatric nutrition and was an advocate for the needs of the elderly, which included starting the Meals on Wheels program in Columbus, Ohio. Betty was predeceased by her parents, Grace (Moore) and Milton T. Miller. She is survived by her husband, Richard T. Bartlett; as well as two daughters and one son, Debbie Bartlett of Old Orchard Beach, Evie Taylor and her husband, Steve, of Fairport, N.Y., and Chris Bartlett of Portland. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Ragan Bartlett of Cape Elizabeth; son-in-law, Ashraf Seif El Din of Cairo, Egypt; five grandchildren, Laura (Taylor) Charles, Juliann Taylor, Sarah Bartlett, Max Bartlett and Karim Seif El Din; one sister, Elaine (Miller) Membrado and her husband, Mike, of New York City; one brother, Tom Miller of Concord, Calif.; and several beloved cousins. A private memorial service celebrating Betty’s life well lived will be held Nov. 6.
