NEWPORT, Maine — Two women are charged with lying to police after claiming a botched drug deal actually had been a robbery, according to Newport Lt. Randy Wing.
The situation unfolded after Jana Hastey, 25, reported to police Oct. 15 that a man had knocked on her door and then forced his way into her home and stole $840, according to Wing. According to what Hastey told police, he then fled and hadn’t been seen since.
“There were a lot of inconsistencies in her complaint,” said Wing. “It never happened.”
Wing said Hastey owed the man money, so the man led her to believe he was going to purchase drugs for her. Hastey met with the man and gave him the money, but he never returned with the drugs, said Wing, whose investigation included interviewing the man. Wing said the drug involved was “some kind of prescription pill.”
The money given to the man by Hastey was not returned to her, said Wing, who did not know why Hastey owed the man money.
No charges were filed against the man, but Hastey was summoned for filing a false public alarm and unsworn falsification. Another woman, Brandi Smith, 26, of Pittsfield, was summoned for unsworn falsification because, according to Wing, she provided a written statement corroborating Hastey’s allegedly false story.
