BANGOR – Lawrence E. Shaw, 88, husband of 20 years to Hilda M. Ryder-Shaw, died Oct. 28, 2010. He was born Aug. 19, 1922, in Bangor, the son of Lawrence J. and A. Madeline (Barry) Shaw. Lawrence graduated from John Bapst High School, Class of 1939, and he was trained as a machinist with the NYA program in Dexter. Afterward he moved to Bridgeport, Conn., and was employed by Bullard Machine Tool Co. In November 1942, at age 20, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, which later changed to the U.S. Army Air Force. Lawrence served his country until 1946 as a tech sergeant crew chief aircraft mechanic with the 548th Night Fighter Squadron, in Iwo Jima, Leschima and Saipan. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon with three stars and the Good Conduct Medal. Lawrence was employed by New England Telephone Co. for 39 years, and retired in 1985. He was a communicant of St. John Catholic Church, and lifetime member of Telephone Pioneers of America. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife of 41 years, Margaret (Boyle) Shaw, Jan. 30, 1989; two brothers, Francis J. and John J. Shaw; and a granddaughter, Katherine E. Shaw. He is survived by five children: one daughter, Nancy DesJardins of Inverness, Fla., and four sons, Michael L. Shaw of Arundel, Christopher P. Shaw and his wife, Leighbeth B., of Falmouth, Joseph J. Shaw and his wife, Denise B., of Bangor and Thomas E. Shaw and his wife, Kimberly, of Bradley; five grandsons, Matthew of Bangor, Benjamin and Jonathan of Falmouth, Travis and Gary of Bradley; a sister Rosemary H. Ford and her husband, William; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by Hilda’s children, Ann M. Ryder of Hampden; John E. Ryder and his wife, Susan A., of Bangor and Patrick J. Ryder and his wife, Mary Lynne Murray-Ryder, of Hermon; and her grandsons, PJ Dumont of Hampden, Matthew and Adrienne Ryder of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., and Andrew and Christal Ryder of Bangor. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 4-7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John Catholic Church, 207 York St., Bangor. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor.
