PORTLAND – Sister Christina Hachey, aka Sister Mary Scholastica, 95, died peacefully Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, at St. Joseph’s Manor. She was born May 1, 1915, in Orono, to Joseph and Alberta (McGinn) Hachey, and entered the Sisters of Mercy from St. Mary the Assumption Parish, Orono, in 1933. She attended grammar school and high school in Orono, and received her higher education from College of Our Lady of Mercy, now St. Joseph’s College, Standish, with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She also attended Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., pursuing studies in religious education. Sister Christina Hachey’s ministries were in elementary education and in religious education, as well as pastoral work. Her years as an elementary teacher were at Cathedral Grammar School, Portland; St. Joseph’s School, Lewiston; and Immaculate Heart of Mary School, Fairfield. Sister Christina then spent many years coordinating and teaching religion in many parishes throughout the state, as well as doing pastoral work. The areas she ministered in were Brownville Junction, Presque Isle, Bath, Rumford, Augusta, Bath, Brewer, Gardiner and Eagle Lake, and St. Joseph’s, Portland. She was particularly kind to those who were poor, reaching out to them with food and clothing. Upon retirement, she worked at Motherhouse and visited the sick and homebound. Sister Christina was an avid reader and enjoyed a good mystery anytime. While visiting her at the manor, she was always eager to share her books. Sister was blessed with a great sense of humor and brought many smiles to those who knew her. She was a happy person who loved life and one could not leave her presence without feeling uplifted and joyful. Sister was predeceased by her parents; and her sister, Mrs. Frances LaBree. She is survived by several cousins and close friends, as well as her religious community, the Sisters of Mercy, Northeast Community. A wake will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph’s Convent, 605 Stevens Ave., Portland, with a prayer service 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 4:30 p.m. Friday at the convent chapel with the Rev.
