BAR HARBOR – Thomas Harland Haskell, 63, passed away unexpectedly Nov. 13, 2010, after complications from open heart surgery. He was born March 6, 1947, to parents Helen M. and Harland N. Haskell. Tom grew up in Seal Harbor and graduated from Mount Desert High School in 1965, where he was a varsity basketball and baseball player. Tom was a member of the 1965 Mount Desert High School Mustangs State Championship basketball team under legendary coach Bunny Parady. After graduating from high school, Tom attended Maine Maritime Academy, where he played baseball and basketball. He graduated as an engineer in 1969 and shipped out three months at a time during the next 10 years. He had been happily married to Melodie MacLeod of Bar Harbor since fall 1977. For a number of years they owned and operated Haskell’s Sporting Goods, after which he began his 30-year career as a real estate appraiser. Tom will be long remembered as an extraordinary husband, father and friend. Tom had a great sense of humor and was infamous for his hilarious Downeast phone messages and Julia Child impersonations. He always had a way of making everyone laugh. Tom had a passion for sports. He was an exceptional golfer, enjoyed playing tennis, and loved watching hockey and NASCAR racing. Tom had an extremely loving and special relationship with his only daughter, Lindsey, who affectionately called him Papa. Along with his wife of 33 years, Melodie, he is survived by his daughter, Lindsey Doyle and husband, Frank; sister, Prudence Reinhardt and husband, Ed; brother-in-law, Robert MacLeod and wife, Suzanne; brother-in-law, Richard Black; sister-in-law, Charlotte Drake and fiance, Joe Bartlett; nephews, Mark Reinhardt and wife, Julie, Mike Reinhardt and wife, Lisa, Dave Reinhardt and wife, Mindy, and Dan Reinhardt and wife, Stacey; and nieces, Melissa Tracy and husband, Steve, Robin Sue Tapley and husband, Wyman, and Devon Drake. He is also survived by his “family” at Kebo Valley Golf Course. There will be a gathering to celebrate Tom’s life 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at Kebo Valley Golf Course, Bar Harbor, where friends and family will be encouraged to share their memories of him.
