VASSALBORO, Maine — Police say a body found by hunters in central Maine has been identified as that of a child molester who never reported to jail after pleading guilty.
Maine State Police said Friday that 60-year-old William Stein of Vassalboro failed to show up at the Kennebec County Jail in June to begin serving a 3½-year sentence for gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact involving a young child.
Stein’s decomposed body was found Monday in a wooded area off Route 32 in Vassalboro, a short distance from the mobile home park where he had been living. A shotgun was found next to the body.
The medical examiner’s office identified Stein from DNA testing, but the cause of death has not been determined.
