PORTLAND – Joan S. Janeski, 85, died Nov. 22, 2010, as a result of complications from a stroke. She was born Feb. 13, 1925, in Lancaster, Pa., to Kenelm Shirk Sr. and Beatrice (Wertz) Shirk. After moving to Maine, she became interested in the tax-assessing field becoming a certified Maine assessor. She was very active in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and Retired Executive Volunteers, was a charter member of the Maine Chapter of the International Assessing Officers, held offices in the Maine Association of Assessors and Central Maine Association of Assessors, and was involved with Republican politics. She is survived by her sons, Patrick Bailey of Haverhill, Mass., and Michael Bailey of Gray; a daughter, Beverly Evans of Goliad, Texas; 11 grand-children, numerous great-grand-children; and several close friends, Kay, Janice, Kathie and Suzanne. She was predeceased by two sons, Donald Janeski and William Updike. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Portland Preble Street Resource Center.
