Swimming and other forms of aquatic exercise offer a fundamental advantage over other types of physical activity: Because the water both cushions and supports the body, swimmers typically avoid impact injuries and the aches and pains of common muscle strain. Swimming builds overall flexibility, muscle strength and cardiovascular endurance and can accommodate a range of fitness levels and abilities. Many indoor pools offer therapeutic temperatures that ease the pain of arthritis and minimize the stress of entering chilly water. Other pools keep temperatures low for the benefit of vigorous lap-swimmers. Many public pools offer swimming lessons and coaching for beginners as well as expert swimmers, but even non-swimmers can find safe pool classes that do not require swimming ability.
