Brewer police and emergency medical personnel converged near the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge on Tuesday afternoon after receiving a call for help from family and friends of an unidentified woman whom they feared might be preparing to jump off.

The incident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. in the parking lot of the Muddy Rudder restaurant, located adjacent to the bridge at 5 South Main St.

Brewer police Sgt. Arden Jones declined to discuss specifics but he did say the woman, whose name was withheld, did not actually jump, though she managed to get a leg over the guardrail of a section of the bridge that lies above land.

Jones confirmed reports that the woman was intoxicated and distraught at the time of the incident. He said she would be taken to a Bangor hospital for an evaluation.

A Whitneyville woman was caught by store employees at Ocean State Job Lots on Monday afternoon trying to leave the Union Street store without paying for a number of items, according to Bangor police. She reportedly threw a fit and was trashing an office before police arrived, Sgt. Paul Edwards said Tuesday.

Sheila Correia, 47, was calm and sitting in a chair when police got to the store around 5 p.m., Edwards said. She was arrested on a charge of theft and on four outstanding warrants from Washington County, one that dates back to 2007.

According to Edwards, Correia tried to leave the store with $39.95 in merchandise, consisting of chocolates, cookies, sheets, washcloths and other items. She was taken to the Penobscot County Jail and later released, a jail official said. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)

A Bangor police officer wasn’t paying attention when he was leaving the police station on Summer Street late Monday and hit a parked truck that he owns, Sgt. Paul Edwards said Tuesday.

“Officer [Steve] Pelletier was backing out of the parking lot and ran into his own car,” he said. “There was minimal damage.”

The cruiser and Pelletier’s 2006 GMC truck combined had an estimated $800 in damage from the 9:20 p.m. accident, Edwards said. No one was hurt, but the cruiser was out of commission Tuesday for repairs, he said. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
