SUN LAKES, Ariz. – A. Leigh Mills, who lived in Caribou and Cape Elizabeth for many years prior to his retirement, passed away Dec. 1, 2010, in Chandler, Ariz., after a short illness. He was born April 21, 1924, in St. John, Aroostook County, the son of Albert T. Mills and Vivian (Mullen) Mills. He graduated from Caribou High School in 1943 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. He attended Husson College and worked as a territory manager for Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. for 30 years prior to his retirement in 1986. After retirement he lived in Spring Hill, Fla., for many years prior to moving to Arizona and also spent the summer months at his camp at Cross Lake in Northern Maine. He was active in many civic organizations, including being a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Caribou, and American Legion, Caribou. He was lifetime member of Trinity Masonic Lodge No. 130, Presque Isle, and Kora Temple Shrine. He was past president of Caribou Kiwanis Club. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Hylyn (McConnell) Mills; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Laura Mills of Chandler, Ariz.; a daughter, Nancy J. Mills of Cape Neddick; a sister, Mrs. Dawn Busnarda of Kensington, Conn.; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sons, S. Timothy Mills and Jay A. Mills; as well as his sister, Mrs. Wilma Silver. A memorial and interment service is being planned for July 2011 in Caribou at a time and date to be determined. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Caribou.
