NEWPORT and BANGOR – William C. “Bill” Taylor, 93, died Dec. 2, 2010, at a Bangor hospital, after a period of failing health. Born Oct. 25, 1917, in Berlin, N.H., he was the youngest son of Mark H. and Iva (Ordway) Taylor. He graduated from Berlin High School, Class of 1935, and relocated with the family to Newport that summer. A veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, Bill served as supply sergeant with Battery B of the 574th AAA Artillery in the American, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. Bill was past master of Meridian Splendor Lodge AF & AM, Newport, and active in Anah and Tri-County shrines. He was also active with Troop 63 Boy Scouts of America while his sons were active Scouts, both achieving rank of Eagle under his guidance. He was also an active member of High Street Congregational Church for many years. Owner and operator of Guilford Variety Store, Guilford, during the early 1950s, he was then employed for many years at First National Bank, Pittsfield, later Maine National Bank, as assistant cashier and loan officer. Always needing to be active, after his retirement from the bank, he worked for the U.S. Small Business Administration, served as sexton of Riverside Cemetery, Newport, and as a cashier at the state liquor store in Newport. Growing up in the mountainous country around Berlin, N.H., he spent a lot of time outdoors and became proficient with a fly rod and shotgun, and had been known to bring home a mess of brook trout or partridge and, from time-to-time, a few deer. He was known to brave the ski jump in Berlin, N.H., and Tuckerman’s Ravine on Mount Washington, having already survived being the youngest of six rambunctious boys. Bill loved family get-togethers with ample good food and lots of kids running around. He also enjoyed traveling to many different parts of the country, getting together with his buddies from the 574th AAA Artillery, and took several cruises with his wife, Lorna, to the Caribbean, Alaska and Pacific Northwest. He is survived by his wife, Lorna of Bangor; and sons, Brian and his wife, Deborah, of Newport and Bill Jr. and his wife, Daria, of Everett, Wash.; and stepsons, Ralph “Bud” Ingraham and his wife, Tammy, of Pittsfield and Richard Ingraham and wife, Denise, of Parkman. He was affectionately called “Daddy Bill” by his granddaughters and their husbands, Michele and Michael Calhoun of Loganville, Ga., and Sarah and Richard LeBlanc of Attleboro, Mass.; and by great-granddaughters, Meredith and Morgan Calhoun. He is also survived by stepgranddaughters, Heather and her husband, Shawn Quimby, of Anson and Haley and Korin Ingraham; several generations of nieces and nephews; and his special caregiver, Sally Eastman. He was predeceased by his first wife, Marion (Barbour) Taylor; his five brothers, H. Lewis Taylor, M.D., of Dexter, Wesley O. of Augusta, Donald of Augusta, Arthur of Nashua, N.H., and Mark T. of Somersworth, N.H.; and his “everyday angel,” Joyce McDonald. Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport, where services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. Spring burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Newport. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Newport Cultural Center, 23 Water St., Newport, ME 04953.
