SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Dr. Michael “Mike” Anthony Vietti passed away in his sleep Dec. 7, 2010, at his home. He was born March 27, 1941, in Pittsburg, Kan., to the late Michael Vietti and Minnie (Banke) Vietti Kazmierski. He was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School, Pittsburg, Kan., Class of 1959. He received his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in physics from Kansas State University, now Pittsburg State University, then his doctorate in physics from the University of Missouri, Rolla. He was an associate professor of the physics at the University of Maine, Orono, for 16 years, then became vice president of engineering for Rainwise, Inc., Bar Harbor, for the last 23 years. He is survived by his wife, Celia Kay Somers Vietti of Southwest Harbor; his children: two daughters, Suzette Vietti Cowan and her husband, Chris, of Derry, N.H., and Marie Vietti of Boston; four sons, Justin Vietti, Mario Vietti and Anthony Vietti, all of Southwest Harbor, and Dominic Vietti of Memphis, Tenn.; and three grandsons, Chad, Kevin and Nickolas Cowan, all of Derry, N.H. He is also survived by three brothers, Anthony Vietti and his wife, Joyce, of Pittsburg, Kan., Raymond Vietti and his wife, Jackie, of El Dorado, Kan., and Tom Kazmierski of Joplin, Mo.; several nieces, nephews and cousins; a close family friend, Barbara Csavinszky of Old Town; and his beloved family pets, especially Ollie. Visiting hours will be held 5-7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, at Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at St. Joseph’s Church, Ellsworth, with Father Scott Moore, celebrant.
