HOULTON and NEWTON, Mass. – Ardis A. Mills, 91, died peacefully Dec. 7, 2010, at home with her family at her side, as she had devotedly been for so many of her own dear family, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born Sept. 8, 1919, in Weston, the daughter of Varney and Vera (Bubar) Brackett. She grew up on her cherished family dairy farm overlooking Brackett Lake and the “million dollar view.” Ardis was an accomplished nurse, who learned her calling at various training hospitals around New England, but when her beloved husband, Joel, came home from World War II the inseparable couple returned to Maine, the only home they ever really knew. Ardis performed her nursing labor of love for many years right in Houlton, then turned her nurturing instincts to raising her pride and joy, her only child, Beverly. Ardis will be sorely missed and long remembered by her daughter, son-in-law, her extended family – many still on the family farm, and all who were blessed to know her. Friends may call 1 p.m. until the time of the service 3 p.m. Saturday at Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park St., Houlton, with the Rev. Naomi Sam’Kpakra officiating. Gifts may be made in Ardis’ memory to Alzheimer’s Association of Massachusetts, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472 and Season’s Hospice, 275 Grove St., Suite 3-102, Newton, MA 02466. Season’s was incredibly comforting in Ardis’ last days. www.dunnfuneral.com
