MACHIAS – Betty R. (Dow) Schmidlin, 85, died Dec. 20, 2010, at Robbinston Bridge Rest Home, Robbinston. She was born Oct. 20, 1925, in Belgrade, the daughter of Robert and Verna Dow. Betty graduated from Norway High School in 1943. She continued her education at Bouv’e-Boston School of Physical Therapy and Tufts College. She was a public school teacher in Summit, N.J., and Gardiner for many years. While she and John lived in Machias they grew beautiful flower gardens. She belonged to Machias Extension Homemakers and did some seminars for extension programs. She also taught the women of the extension how to make many different crafts through the years. She was the 2001 recipient of the Leon Look Machias Extension Public Service Award. She is survived by one brother, Bruce Dow of Ridge Manor, Fla.; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of many years, John R. Schmidlin; and two brothers, Robert Dow Jr. and Neil Dow. At Betty’s request, there will be no funeral services. Internment will be in the family lot at Pine Grove Cemetery, Norway, at a later date. Anyone wishing to honor Betty in a monetary way can send a contribution to the John R.
