Gov.-elect Paul LePage hired his 22-year-old daughter as an assistant to his chief of staff. She will earn $41,000 annually. Does this send the right message to an electorate looking for accountability and efficiency in state government? Is it “brazen nepotism,” as the state Democratic Party claims?
Or is Mr. LePage merely surrounding himself with people with whom he feels comfortable, and in whom he trusts? Should he have waited a few months
before hiring his daughter? Or was it right to bring her on board at the outset?
