CALAIS – Shirley Norman Campbell Sr., 85, passed away Jan. 3, 2011, at a Bangor health care facility, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Shirl was born June 4, 1925, in Baileyville, the son of Ceiward and Reta (Kennedy) Campbell. He graduated Woodland High School in 1943 and married Dorothy Bartlett that same year. Shirl worked as a papermaker at St. Croix and then Georgia Pacific Mill for 40 years. He was a hard working, witty man with a great sense of humor. He loved his family dearly and always put them first. Papa, as he preferred to be called, enjoyed countless hours of laughing and teasing with his many grandchildren. Shirl was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy; his parents, Ceiward and Reta; brothers, Ceiward, Frank and baby Ray; and sister, Jacqueline. He is survived by brothers, Donald and Stephen; sisters, Ruth and Barbara; son, Shirley Campbell Jr. and his wife, Beryl Ann, of Bangor; daughters, Patricia Gagner and her husband, Jeffrey, of Baileyville, Carole Thornton and her husband, Gary, of Texas, Bonnie Johnson of Bangor, Joanne Pottle and her husband, Bernard, of Perry and Judy McGinley and her husband, Stephen, of Alexander; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday.
