WINTHROP and MONTICELLO – Randolph Edwin Burtt, 94, died peacefully Dec. 25, 2010. He passed away at the home of his son-in-law, Gary C. Brown and his daughter, Cynthia, where he lived for 21/2 years. Randolph was born Dec. 12, 1916, son of William A. and Alma (Jones) Burtt. Originally born in Burtts Corner, New Brunswick, Randolph was naturalized as an U.S. citizen in 1938 at age 22. He was a very skillful man in numerous occupations, but was known mostly as a woodsman, farmer and owned a small construction operation. He attended schools in Canada and proved to be an outstanding student of Monticello schools. Randolph enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, playing pool, snowmobiling and especially camping, where the game of pitch became a favorite card game. He was an excellent marksman and taught his grandchildren how to handle firearms. His camp was the gathering place of not only family members, but of friends and their families. In his younger years, he was involved with Odd Fellows, Mars Hill, and Monticello Grange. When snowmobiling became a part of the winter landscape in Maine, he became president of Meduxnekeag Ramblers Snowmobile Club. Although an avid sportsman, Randolph’s anchor in life was his faith in God. He would express this faith to anyone who would listen. His leadership was known at Lake Road Free Will Baptist Church, Monticello, where he served for more than 50 years. He shared his singing voice and music abilities as song leader, played the trombone, was an accomplished harmonica player, taught classes in the Sunday school, served as youth leader, trustee and as a deacon. His outgoing personality and story-telling abilities made him a favorite of all ages. He was a very generous man and his gifts of encouragement were received by many. He will be greatly missed. Randolph is survived by his three children, Cynthia Brown and her husband, Gary, of Winthrop, Frank Burtt and his wife, Karen, of Monticello, and Ada Homchuck and her husband, Peter, of Littleton; his daughter-in-law, Violet Burtt of Leicester, Mass.; 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; his brother, Herbert Burtt of Leicester, Mass.; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Beatrice; his son, Carl; his brothers, Vernon, Allison, Frank, Owen, William Jr., Arville and Keith; and his sisters, Doras, Phylis, Ada, Mildred and Hildred. Friends may call noon until the time of service 2 p.m. Saturday at Lake Road Free Will Baptist Church with Pastor Carl DeMerchant officiating.
