BIRCH HARBOR – James “Sunny” L. Rice Jr., 72, loving husband father and grandfather, died peacefully Jan. 7, 2011, at home, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 18, 1938, in Gouldsboro, to James L Rice Sr. and Bernice Tracy Rice. He served one tour of duty in the Navy and then went on to be a guide, woodcutter, machinist, carpenter and lobster fisherman for the past 40 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Jackie; a sister, Ruth Clark of Florida; and three daughters, Kathy Scantlin of Kansas, Pamela Bridges and husband, Bryan, of Birch Harbor and Tracy Rice and companion, Mike Thibeault, of Prospect Harbor. He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren, Nicole, Taylor, Danielle, Samantha, Ryan and Tanner; great-grandchildren, Kali, Jayden, Jenna, Christopher and Brennan; best friends, Arvide, Phyllis, Joe and Ruby; two special cousins, Jerry Conners, and Hollis and Ellen Smith; sister-in-law, Linda Hurd and husband, Charlie; nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors.
